Japanese Okonomiyaki
Okonomiyaki is a popular pan-fried dish that consists of batter and cabbage. Selected toppings and ingredients are added which can vary greatly (anything from meat and seafood to wasabi and cheese). This variability is reflected in the dish's name: 'okonomi' literally means 'to one's liking'.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Pickled ginger - For garnish
- Bonito flakes - For garnish
- Japanese mayonnaise - To taste
- Okonomiyaki sauce - To taste
- Cooked bacon - 4 strips, chopped
- Green onions - 4, finely chopped
- Cabbage - 4 cups, finely chopped
- Water - 1 cup
- Eggs - 4
- All-purpose flour - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, eggs, and water until smooth.
- Add the cabbage, green onions, and bacon to the batter and stir until well combined.
- Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat and add a ladleful of the batter.
- Spread the batter into a pancake shape and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the bottom is golden brown.
- Flip the pancake and cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the other side is golden brown.
- Transfer the pancake to a plate and drizzle with okonomiyaki sauce and Japanese mayonnaise.
- Garnish with bonito flakes and pickled ginger before serving.
