Croque Monsieur Sandwich
A classic French grilled ham and cheese sandwich topped with creamy béchamel sauce.
Ingredients - Serves 2
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Nutmeg - 1/4 teaspoon
- Dijon mustard - 1 tablespoon
- Milk - 1 cup
- All-purpose flour - 2 tablespoons
- Butter - 2 tablespoons
- Gruyere cheese - 4 slices
- Ham - 4 slices
- Bread - 4 slices
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Spread butter on one side of each bread slice.
- Place two slices of ham and two slices of Gruyere cheese on two bread slices.
- Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
- In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
- Cook the sauce until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in the Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
- Spread the béchamel sauce over the top of each sandwich.
- Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
