Szarlotka is a traditional Polish apple pie made with a buttery crust and a sweet apple filling.
Ingredients
Powdered sugar - For dusting
Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
Cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
Apples - 4 large, peeled, cored, and sliced
Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
Egg - 1
Granulated sugar - 1/2 cup
Unsalted butter - 1 cup, cold and cubed
All - purpose flour - 2 cups
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Add the cold cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add the egg and mix until the dough comes together.
Divide the dough in half. Press one half into the bottom of a greased 9-inch (23 cm) pie dish to form the crust.
In a separate bowl, toss the sliced apples with cinnamon and lemon juice.
Arrange the apple slices evenly over the crust.
Crumble the remaining dough over the apples to form the streusel topping.
Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Remove from the oven and let cool before dusting with powdered sugar.
