Pan Dulce, also known as Mexican sweet bread, is a delicious pastry with a soft and sweet dough, often decorated with colorful toppings.

Ingredients

  • Colorful sprinkles - For decoration
  • Water - 2 tablespoons
  • Confectioners' sugar - 1 cup
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • Milk - 1/2 cup
  • Eggs - 2
  • Unsalted butter - 1/2 cup, softened
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sugar - 1/2 cup
  • Active dry yeast - 2 1/4 teaspoons
  • All - purpose flour - 4 cups

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add the softened butter, eggs, milk, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a round or oval shape.
  8. Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Bake the pan dulce in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. While the pan dulce is baking, prepare the glaze by mixing confectioners' sugar and water in a small bowl until smooth.
  11. Remove the pan dulce from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Drizzle the glaze over the top and decorate with colorful sprinkles.
  12. Serve the pan dulce warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!
