Palak Paneer

Palak Paneer

Palak Paneer is a popular Indian dish made with spinach and cottage cheese, cooked in a spicy onion-tomato gravy.

Ingredients

  • Oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Garam masala powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Red chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Green chillies - 2, slit
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
  • Tomatoes - 2 medium, finely chopped
  • Onion - 1 large, finely chopped
  • Paneer (cottage cheese) - 200 grams
  • Spinach - 500 grams

Instructions

  1. Blanch the spinach in boiling water for 2 minutes. Drain and blend in a mixer to a smooth puree.
  2. Heat the oil in a pan and add the cumin seeds. When they crackle, add the finely chopped onions and sauté on a medium flame till they turn translucent.
  3. Add the chopped ginger, garlic and green chillies and sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, chilli powder, garam masala and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  5. Add the spinach puree and ½ cup of water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes.
  6. Add the paneer cubes, mix gently and cook on a medium flame for another 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Serve hot with roti or rice.
