Milk Tart

Milk Tart is a classic South African dessert, consisting of a sweet pastry crust, filled with a creamy milk custard.

Ingredients

  • Cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • Butter - 2 tablespoons
  • Cornstarch - 3 tablespoons
  • Eggs - 2
  • Sugar - 1 cup
  • Milk - 4 cups
  • Pastry crust - 1

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare the pastry crust in a pie dish.
  2. In a large saucepan, heat the milk to just below boiling.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, and cornstarch until smooth.
  4. Gradually whisk a small amount of the hot milk into the egg mixture, then pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk.
  5. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens to a custard consistency.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract.
  7. Pour the custard into the prepared crust and sprinkle with cinnamon.
  8. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the custard is set and the crust is golden.
  9. Allow to cool before serving.
