Lasagna Alla Bolognese

This classic Italian lasagna is made with layers of homemade Bolognese sauce, lasagna noodles, and creamy béchamel sauce.

Ingredients

  • Mozzarella cheese - 2 cups, shredded
  • Parmesan cheese - 1 cup, grated
  • Béchamel sauce - 2 cups
  • Lasagna noodles - 12 sheets
  • Salt and pepper - To taste
  • Dried basil - 1 teaspoon
  • Dried oregano - 1 teaspoon
  • Red wine - 1/2 cup
  • Canned crushed tomatoes - 1 can (28 ounces)
  • Tomato paste - 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Celery - 1 stalk, finely chopped
  • Carrot - 1, finely chopped
  • Onion - 1, finely chopped
  • Italian sausage - 1/2 pound
  • Ground beef - 1 pound

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion, carrot, celery, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add the crushed tomatoes, red wine, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  6. Spread a thin layer of the Bolognese sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  7. Place a layer of lasagna noodles on top of the sauce.
  8. Spread a layer of Bolognese sauce over the noodles, followed by a layer of béchamel sauce.
  9. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and shredded mozzarella cheese.
  10. Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used, ending with a layer of béchamel sauce and cheese on top.
  11. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  12. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  13. Let the lasagna cool for 10 minutes before serving.
