Kaalikääryleet

Kaalikääryleet

Kaalikääryleet, also known as cabbage rolls, are a traditional Finnish dish made with cabbage leaves stuffed with a flavorful filling.

Ingredients

  • Tomato sauce - 1 cup
  • Beef broth - 2 cups
  • Salt and pepper - To taste
  • Milk - 2 tablespoons
  • Bread crumbs - 1/4 cup
  • Egg - 1
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Rice - 1/2 cup, cooked
  • Ground beef - 500 grams
  • Cabbage - 1 large head

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the whole cabbage head and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from the pot and let cool. Once cooled, carefully remove the leaves, keeping them intact.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, bread crumbs, milk, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Take a cabbage leaf and place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center. Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling and roll it up tightly. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and filling.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  5. In a baking dish, pour the beef broth and tomato sauce. Place the cabbage rolls in the dish, seam side down.
  6. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
  7. Serve the kaalikääryleet hot with the sauce spooned over the top. Enjoy!
