Dutch Sushi

Dutch Sushi

A unique twist on traditional sushi, this Dutch version features herring, a popular fish in the Netherlands, rolled with sushi rice.

Ingredients

  • Wasabi - For serving
  • Soy sauce - For serving
  • Nori sheets - 4
  • Herring fillets - 4, thinly sliced
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Rice vinegar - 1/4 cup
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Sushi rice - 2 cups

Instructions

  1. Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rice and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Stir until the sugar and salt are dissolved.
  3. When the rice is done, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
  4. Place a nori sheet on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands and spread a thin layer of rice on the nori, leaving a small space at the top and bottom for sealing the roll.
  5. Arrange a line of herring slices in the center of the rice. Roll the sushi tightly using the bamboo mat, applying pressure to keep the roll firm.
  6. Slice the sushi roll into bite-sized pieces using a sharp knife. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
  7. Serve the sushi with soy sauce and wasabi.
