Croque Monsieur de Luxe

This gourmet version of the classic French sandwich is made with ham, gruyere cheese, and a creamy béchamel sauce.

Ingredients

  • Egg - 1, beaten
  • Baguette - 1, sliced
  • Gruyere cheese - 8 slices
  • Ham - 8 slices
  • Nutmeg - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt and pepper - To taste
  • Milk - 2 cups
  • All - purpose flour - 2 tablespoons
  • Butter - 2 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the flour and whisk until combined.
  3. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly, and cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  6. Assemble the sandwiches by layering the ham, cheese, and béchamel sauce on the baguette slices.
  7. Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and brush with the beaten egg.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
