Let's Get Started

  1. Fill a gourd or cup with yerba mate leaves, about two-thirds full.
  2. Cover the gourd or cup with your hand and shake it gently to settle the leaves.
  3. Tilt the gourd or cup at a 45-degree angle and pour hot water (not boiling) into the empty side.
  4. Allow the yerba mate leaves to absorb the water for a few seconds.
  5. Insert a bombilla (metal straw with a filter) into the wet side of the gourd or cup.
  6. Sip the yerba mate through the bombilla, avoiding stirring the leaves.
  7. Continue adding hot water to the gourd or cup as needed to maintain the infusion.
