Ven Pongal
Ven Pongal is a popular South Indian dish made with rice and lentils, seasoned with black pepper, ginger and cumin. It's a hearty and comforting dish, often served for breakfast.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Salt - To taste
- Curry leaves - A sprig
- Cashew nuts - 10
- Ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Ginger - 1 inch piece, finely chopped
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
- Moong dal - 1/4 cup
- Rice - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Wash the rice and moong dal together and pressure cook with 4 cups of water for 4 whistles.
- Heat ghee in a pan, add cumin seeds, black pepper, finely chopped ginger, curry leaves and cashew nuts.
- Fry until the cashew nuts turn golden brown.
- Add this tempering to the cooked rice and dal mixture.
- Add salt to taste and mix well.
- Serve hot with sambar and chutney.
