Ingredients - Serves 10

Let's Get Started

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the masa harina, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. In another bowl, beat the softened butter until it's creamy.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter, alternating with the warm water or milk. Beat until well combined.
  4. If desired, add a few drops of pink food coloring to give the tamales a traditional pink hue.
  5. Spread a spoonful of the masa mixture onto the center of a corn husk. Add a spoonful of your chosen filling.
  6. Fold the sides of the corn husk in towards the center, then fold the bottom of the husk up.
  7. Repeat with the remaining husks and masa mixture.
  8. Place the tamales in a steamer and steam for about 2 hours, or until the masa is firm and the tamales pull away from the husk easily.
  9. Let the tamales cool for a few minutes before unwrapping and serving.
