Tamales de Dulce
Tamales de Dulce, or sweet tamales, are a traditional Mexican dessert made with masa, sugar, and fruits or chocolate.
Ingredients - Serves 10
- Fruit or chocolate for filling - 1 cup
- Dried corn husks - 20, soaked in hot water until soft
- Pink food coloring - A few drops, optional
- Warm water or milk - 1 1/2 cups
- Butter - 1 cup, softened
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
- Masa harina - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, mix together the masa harina, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- In another bowl, beat the softened butter until it's creamy.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter, alternating with the warm water or milk. Beat until well combined.
- If desired, add a few drops of pink food coloring to give the tamales a traditional pink hue.
- Spread a spoonful of the masa mixture onto the center of a corn husk. Add a spoonful of your chosen filling.
- Fold the sides of the corn husk in towards the center, then fold the bottom of the husk up.
- Repeat with the remaining husks and masa mixture.
- Place the tamales in a steamer and steam for about 2 hours, or until the masa is firm and the tamales pull away from the husk easily.
- Let the tamales cool for a few minutes before unwrapping and serving.
