  1. In a large bowl, combine the dried fruit, brown sugar, butter, and eggs. Mix well.
  2. Add the flour, breadcrumbs, and mixed spice. Stir until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the beer and treacle, stirring constantly.
  4. Pour the mixture into a greased pudding basin. Cover with a lid or foil.
  5. Place the basin in a large pot of boiling water. The water should come halfway up the sides of the basin.
  6. Cover the pot and simmer for 4 hours, adding more water as necessary.
  7. Remove the pudding from the pot and let it cool for a few minutes before turning it out onto a plate.
  8. Serve the pudding warm, with custard or cream if desired.
