Khoresh E Shirin
Khoresh-e-Shirin is a delicious Persian sweet and sour stew made with chicken, dried fruits, and aromatic spices.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Fresh cilantro - For garnish
- Water - 2 cups
- Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Lemon juice - 2 tablespoons
- Honey - 2 tablespoons
- Ground cardamom - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon
- Turmeric - 1 teaspoon
- Saffron threads - 1/2 teaspoon, dissolved in 2 tablespoons of hot water
- Dried barberries - 1/2 cup
- Dried prunes - 1 cup
- Dried apricots - 1 cup
- Onion - 1, finely chopped
- Chicken thighs - 4, bone-in
Let's Get Started
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the chicken thighs and cook until browned on all sides.
- Add the turmeric, cinnamon, and ground cardamom. Stir well to coat the chicken.
- Add the dried apricots, prunes, barberries, saffron water, honey, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together.
- Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for about 45 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
- Serve the Khoresh-e-Shirin hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
- Enjoy with steamed rice or Persian flatbread.
