Let's Get Started

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Add the eggs, vegetable oil, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the boiling water, mixing until the batter is thin.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and let cool completely on a wire rack.
  7. Once the cakes are cool, slice each one in half horizontally to create four layers.
  8. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread with a third of the cherry pie filling. Top with a third of the whipped cream.
  9. Repeat with the remaining layers, cherry pie filling, and whipped cream.
  10. Sprinkle the top of the cake with the chocolate shavings.
  11. Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours before serving.
