Black Forest Gateau
A rich, chocolate sponge cake filled with cherries and whipped cream. This classic German dessert is a delightful treat.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Chocolate shavings - 1/2 cup
- Whipped cream - 2 cups
- Cherry pie filling - 1 can
- Boiling water - 1 cup
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Buttermilk - 1 cup
- Vegetable oil - 3/4 cup
- Eggs - 3 large
- Sugar - 2 cups
- Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
- Baking soda - 1 1/2 teaspoons
- Baking powder - 1 1/2 teaspoons
- Cocoa powder - 3/4 cup
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Add the eggs, vegetable oil, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth.
- Gradually add the boiling water, mixing until the batter is thin.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and let cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once the cakes are cool, slice each one in half horizontally to create four layers.
- Place one layer on a serving plate and spread with a third of the cherry pie filling. Top with a third of the whipped cream.
- Repeat with the remaining layers, cherry pie filling, and whipped cream.
- Sprinkle the top of the cake with the chocolate shavings.
- Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours before serving.
