Pfeffernüsse are traditional German spiced cookies, perfect for the holiday season. They are covered in powdered sugar and have a delightful peppery kick.

Ingredients

  • Powdered sugar - 1/2 cup
  • Egg - 1 large
  • Molasses - 1/4 cup
  • Brown sugar - 1/2 cup
  • Butter - 1/2 cup, softened
  • Baking soda - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Ground pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Ground cloves - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Ground nutmeg - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ground cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon
  • All - purpose flour - 2 1/4 cups

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, spices, and baking soda.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter, brown sugar, and molasses until creamy. Beat in the egg.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, beating until combined.
  5. Shape the dough into 1-inch balls and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the cookies are set and lightly browned.
  7. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Place the powdered sugar in a shallow dish and roll the cooled cookies in the sugar to coat.
