Oliebollen

Oliebollen are a traditional Dutch treat on New Year's Eve and at funfairs. They are kind of like doughnuts.

Ingredients

  • Powdered sugar - For dusting
  • Vegetable oil - For frying
  • Raisins - 1 cup
  • Eggs - 2, beaten
  • Warm milk - 2 cups
  • Active dry yeast - 1 package
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sugar - 1/4 cup
  • All - purpose flour - 4 cups

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Add the warm milk and beaten eggs to the dry ingredients and mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Stir in the raisins.
  4. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  5. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F.
  6. Using two spoons, drop spoonfuls of dough into the hot oil.
  7. Fry the oliebollen until they are golden brown, about 5 minutes, turning them halfway through so they brown evenly.
  8. Remove the oliebollen with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels.
  9. Dust the oliebollen with powdered sugar before serving.
