Old Sturbridge Village Gingerbread

This is a traditional gingerbread recipe from Old Sturbridge Village. It's rich, moist, and full of warm spices.

Ingredients

  • Hot water - 1 cup
  • Molasses - 1 cup
  • Egg - 1 large
  • Granulated sugar - 1/2 cup
  • Unsalted butter - 1/2 cup, softened
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ground cloves - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ground cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
  • Ground ginger - 1 tablespoon
  • Baking soda - 1 1/2 teaspoons
  • All - purpose flour - 2 1/2 cups

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, followed by the molasses.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the hot water, until everything is well combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the gingerbread to cool in the pan before cutting into squares and serving.
