Makowiec

Makowiec is a traditional Polish poppy seed roll filled with a sweet and nutty mixture.

Ingredients

  • Powdered sugar - For dusting
  • Eggs - 2
  • Active dry yeast - 2 1/4 teaspoons
  • All - purpose flour - 3 cups
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • Almonds - 1/2 cup, finely chopped
  • Raisins - 1/2 cup
  • Sugar - 1/2 cup
  • Butter - 1/2 cup
  • Milk - 1 cup
  • Poppy seeds - 1 cup

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm but not boiling.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the poppy seeds, butter, sugar, raisins, almonds, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the warm milk over the poppy seed mixture and stir well. Let it sit for 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and yeast. Make a well in the center and add the eggs. Mix until a dough forms.
  5. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle shape.
  9. Spread the poppy seed filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  10. Roll up the dough tightly, starting from one of the long sides.
  11. Place the roll on a greased baking sheet and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Remove from the oven and let it cool before dusting with powdered sugar.
  13. Slice and serve the Makowiec as a delicious dessert or with a cup of coffee.
