Black and White Cookies

These classic black and white cookies are soft, cake-like cookies with a half vanilla and half chocolate icing.

Ingredients

  • Hot water - 2-3 tablespoons
  • Powdered sugar - 2 cups
  • Cocoa powder - 2 tablespoons
  • Milk - 1/2 cup
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • Egg - 1
  • Granulated sugar - 1 cup
  • Unsalted butter - 1/2 cup, softened
  • Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • All - purpose flour - 2 cups

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
  6. Divide the dough in half. In one half, mix in the cocoa powder until well incorporated.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of the vanilla and chocolate dough onto the prepared baking sheet, alternating between the two.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and hot water until smooth.
  10. Spread half of each cookie with the vanilla icing and the other half with the chocolate icing.
  11. Allow the icing to set before serving.
