Banh Beo

Banh Beo is a traditional Vietnamese dish consisting of steamed rice cakes topped with savory ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Ground black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Fish sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Fried shallots - 2 tablespoons
  • Green onions - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Pork belly - 1/4 cup, thinly sliced
  • Dried shrimp - 1/4 cup, soaked and chopped
  • Water - 1 1/2 cups
  • Rice flour - 1 cup

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the rice flour, water, salt, and vegetable oil. Stir until smooth.
  2. Grease a steamer tray with oil and pour a thin layer of the rice flour mixture onto the tray.
  3. Steam the rice cakes for about 5 minutes, or until set.
  4. In a pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the pork belly and cook until crispy.
  5. Add the dried shrimp and cook for another 2 minutes.
  6. In a small bowl, mix together the fish sauce, sugar, and ground black pepper.
  7. To serve, place the steamed rice cakes on a plate. Top with the pork belly and dried shrimp mixture.
  8. Drizzle the fish sauce mixture over the rice cakes.
  9. Garnish with chopped green onions and fried shallots.
  10. Serve hot and enjoy!
